With the ever-present threats of hacking and ransomware, the ability to quickly recover from an attack is an essential capability that all SMEs must have.
BackupAssist recently announced the general availability launch of BackupAssist ER. This new solution is a fully automated, disk-to-disk cloud backup for Windows Servers. The new software provides Express Recovery options that enable its users to achieve fast, predictable recoveries of data and systems, and to perform recoveries both locally and in the cloud. At an SME-friendly price point, BackupAssist ER delivers an alternative to more expensive Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) options.
BackupAssist ER offers disk-to-disk-to-cloud replication as a low-cost alternative to DRaaS, but lacks the recovery speed of DRaaS. It is suited for small enterprises willing to make that tradeoff.
Linus Chang, BackupAssist’s founder and CEO, provided a quote: “We’ve known for some time that legacy backup systems are becoming less effective each day, as cyber-attacks increase in sophistication and target backup data in addition to primary data. To compound problems, the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that traditional backup procedures, such as swapping hard disks, are difficult or impossible during a lockdown.”

BackupAssist 365 backs up files and emails stored in the cloud. While backup of cloud-based data may seem rather ho-hum in today’s artificial intelligent, block chain obsessed, digital transformation focused world, it solves a real world that nearly every size organization faces: how to cost-effectively and simply protect all those pesky files and emails that people store in cloud applications such as DropBox, Office 365, Google Drive, OneDrive, Gmail, Outlook and others.

One of the biggest challenges that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) face is protecting their critical data in an era of increasing cybercrime. While it’s often the Fortune 500 companies that make the headlines when data-related disasters strike, ransomware attacks present a serious problem to all businesses worldwide, regardless of size. Smaller firms must face the real threat of a ransomware attack just like larger firms, since SMBs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are being targeted alongside larger companies.

The industry has been seeing attacks in which malicious software invades end-user PCs and encrypts user files. This type of attack is described as “ransomware.” The end-user or the organization is offered the key to decrypt the files, for a price. If the price is paid, the key is not always provided. The WannaCry ransomware attack is a recent example. BackupAssist believes that it has a solution, CryptoSafeGuard, for this problem for mid-market organizations using Windows software. CryptoSafeGuard monitors end-user systems while backing up changing data files. If it observes an attempt to rapidly change entire directories or entire filesystems, it steps in to protect the off-system backups, notify administrators and restore the previous environment. Here’s how the company describes CryptoSafeGuard:
